The new MSG

By The Other Debra

The first time I heard of “MSG” was after eating spareribs in the late 70’s at the premiere kosher restaurant, Shmulke Bernsteins,  located then on Essex Street in the Lower East Side of Manhattan (a hip area that hopefully we will be able to visit again soon)  .  I passed out afterwards, a reaction to the seasoning, monosodium glutamate, simply coined “MSG”. It didn’t stop me from eating the spareribs, not then or at any other opportunity I had when I was nearby.  I was just forewarned that I would promptly nod off and fall asleep!

Well, fast forward to the days of COVID 19, 2020 and MSGe5691805-52ad-4e1d-87b0-9b854453cc6c is not just the three initials for monosodium glutamate, but, our new mantra as we leave the house these days: Masks, Sanitizer, Gloves.

Our lives changed in early March as the Corona Virus swept rapidly across all populations. Those of us in our 60’s and older, have been singled out as “special”.  In this most rewarding chapter of life, we have been branded as the vulnerable population.  We have spent 4 weeks in almost total lock down, only venturing out for groceries or medication. We celebrated the springtime holidays alone and missed our family and friends. Each day new restrictions were added.

The new normal has become wearing a mask and gloves when going out, and washing hands for a minimum of 30 seconds upon returning home. This is challenging to get used to. I have left the house one too many times,sharon-mccutcheon-bEDh-PxXZ0c-unsplash only to rush back because I forgot to put on my mask or neglected to grab my gloves. I now keep a few masks and gloves in my pocketbook and in the glove compartment of the car. I have also placed a box of masks, gloves and a bottle of hand sanitizer by the door, as I exit or enter.

So, be forewarned, like back in the 70’s, stay prepped and ready.

Keep safe, follow the directives and remember-M(masks)S(sanitizer)G(gloves),!

I would skip the gloves unless you are a health professional or preparing food for an institution. Keeping your hands washed, clean and sanitary is much more effective and safe unless you’ve had extensive training on using gloves properly.
